Year 6 Information

Learning in Year 6 is a little different to the rest of the school as we are preparing them for secondary school and life beyond.  During the year the Year 6 pupils will have the opportunity to build their team in different ways - including a 5 day residential and will prepare themselves to show everything they've learned in their KS2 SATs.  Here is some of what you might need to know.

Year 6 Residential

Every year, our year six children are given the opportunity to attend a week-long activity course at a residential centre. The challenge of being away from home for a week, alongside the physical and mental challenges of the activities themselves, sees children’s independence and confidence grow exponentially. It also gives them a chance to develop their team work and leadership skills as they work alongside children who they may not normally socialise or work with. There is plenty of fun to be had along the way and many of the children wish they could go again (however, the adults are always happy to get home at the end!).

SATS

Key Stage 2 (Year 6) SATs tests cover:-

  • English reading
  • English grammar, punctuation and spelling
  • Maths

These tests are taken in mid-May and last just under 5.5 hours in total. You’ll get the results in July.

It is important not to make these tests daunting for the child as they can become very stressed. However, we need to find a balance of support and challenge in order for the children to achieve their best.

There is no longer a writing test during the Key Stage 2 SATs. Instead, children produce a ‘Big Write’ every couple of weeks. The teachers formally assess these from across the year to inform their final teacher assessment. We keep the children updated with their progress throughout the year so they are aware of their targets and how to improve their writing.
