Maths at Ainslie Wood
Ethos
At Ainslie Wood, we aim to foster a love of Maths and to develop confident, skilled, and resilient problem-solvers who can apply their mathematical knowledge across a variety of contexts. Our curriculum develops fluency in arithmetic as well as promoting the real-life application of mathematical skills, helping pupils see the relevance of their learning.
Learning Approach
Maths lessons are delivered across the key stages on a daily basis personalised to the needs of the learners. Children learn through the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) approach which allows them to move from a hands-on experience to abstract thinking. As children become more secure, they are given opportunities to deepen their understanding of Maths through logical reasoning, problem-solving, visualising and conjecturing to generalise and prove ideas.
Our Calculation Policy supports the smooth progression of learning in the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). It outlines mental and written strategies that build on pupils’ understanding and their readiness to progress to the next stage.
Financial Curriculum
All children at Ainslie Wood partake in ‘Finance Fridays’. Through fun, interactive activities, children learn about budgeting, saving, and spending wisely in order to prepare them for real-world financial challenges.
Home Learning
We understand the importance of a home-school partnership in the development of Maths skills. Home learning challenges are available on MyMaths to consolidate pupils’ current learning and KS2 parents are invited to weekly 'Stay and Learn' or 'Stay and Solve' sessions, both with a mathematical focus.
